The reaction between powdered calcium carbonate, CaCO3(s), and dilute nitric acid, HNO3(aq), was followed by measuring the loss of mass. In each run the same mass of powder was added to the same volume of acid; three acid concentrations were used. The flask stood on a balance connected to a data logger, which recorded the mass of the reaction mixture every 0.2 seconds for 40 seconds.

CaCO3(s) + 2 HNO3(aq) → Ca(NO3)2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

The results were plotted on the graph.

Polecenie

For the runs with 0.40 and 0.80 mol dm−3 HNO3(aq), suggest which reactant, CaCO3(s) or HNO3(aq), was the limiting reagent. Give a reason for your answer.

Odpowiedź z klucza

Limiting reagent: HNO3

AND

Reason: the same mass of CaCO3 gave different total mass losses/different masses of CO2, so the amount of CO2 was set by the amount of acid

OR

Reason: doubling the concentration of the acid roughly doubled the mass lost «0.7 g and 1.4 g»

OR

Reason: if CaCO3 had been limiting, both curves would have levelled off after the same mass loss ✔

Schemat punktowania

[1] for HNO3 with a reason based on the different final masses; the identity alone scores 0. Accept the converse argument, CaCO3 in excess because the mass loss depends on the acid.
