Gallium, a group 13 metal, melts at about 30 °C and is used in semiconductors such as gallium arsenide.
Gallium forms a sulfate of formula
(i) Both ionic and covalent bonding are present in this compound. State which particles are held together by each type of bond.
(ii) Contrast covalent and ionic bonds in terms of what happens to the valence electrons of the atoms involved.
(iii) Write an equation for the formation of a solution of gallium(III) sulfate from solid gallium(III) hydroxide and sulfuric acid.

(v) Gallium lies directly below aluminium in the periodic table. Predict, with a reason, whether gallium(III) hydroxide is amphoteric.
(vi) Samples of gallium and nickel and aqueous solutions of gallium(III) sulfate and nickel(II) sulfate are available. Discuss how these could be used to find out which of the two metals is the more reactive.
