In another investigation, the rate of the reaction between acidified potassium manganate(VII), KMnO4, and ethanedioic acid was followed with a colorimeter. As the reaction proceeds, the purple colour of the mixture fades until the solution is colourless. Before the rate could be measured, a calibration curve for the colorimeter had to be constructed from solutions of potassium manganate(VII) of known concentration.
