Wspólne informacje do wiązki zadań
A sodium-ion battery is a rechargeable cell in which sodium is stored in a hard-carbon negative electrode and in a layered sodium manganese oxide, NaMnO2, positive electrode. Sodium ions move through the electrolyte between the two electrodes.
Polecenie
Sodium ions are produced at the anode from the sodium atoms stored in the hard carbon.
(i) State the half-equation for the reaction occurring at the anode while the battery discharges.
(ii) The battery is rechargeable. Annotate the diagram below to show the direction in which electrons flow through the external wires while the battery is being recharged.

(i) Na → Na+ + e− ✔
(ii) arrow«s» on the external wire«s» pointing from the positive electrode «NaMnO2» through the charger to the negative electrode «hard carbon» ✔
Schemat punktowania
(i) [1]; accept NaC6 → C6 + Na+ + e− and equilibrium arrows; do not accept the reduction written the other way round. (ii) [1] for the correct direction in the external circuit; no mark if any arrow is drawn in the electrolyte.
Komentarz. During recharging the cell works as an electrolytic cell: the charger pushes electrons back into the electrode that released them during discharge.
