Buta-1,3-diene, C4H6, is a raw material for synthetic rubber. It can be completely hydrogenated to butane.
C4H6(g) + 2 H2(g) → C4H10(g)
Polecenie
(i) Calculate, in kJ mol−1, the standard enthalpy change of this hydrogenation reaction using the enthalpy of combustion data in section 14 of the data booklet.
(ii) The standard entropy change for this reaction is ΔS⊖ = −231 J K−1 mol−1. Calculate the temperature above which the reaction is no longer spontaneous. Use your answer to part (i) and section 1 of the data booklet.
If you did not obtain an answer to part (i), use the value −150 kJ mol−1, although this is not the correct answer.

Schemat punktowania
(i) M1: sums of the combustion enthalpies of reactants and of products; M2: ΔH = -235 kJ mol^-1 (sign essential). Award [2] for the correct final answer. (ii) M1: ΔH and ΔS expressed in consistent units; M2: T = 1020 K (accept 1017 K). Award [2] for the correct final answer; with -150 kJ mol^-1 the answer is 649 K. No ECF for M2 if a negative temperature is obtained.
Komentarz. With combustion data the equation is reactants minus products, the reverse of the formation-enthalpy form; forgetting the factor of 2 for hydrogen gives +51 kJ mol^-1.
