An outdoor public swimming pool (a lido) stays open throughout the year. The water is not heated, and in winter, when the pool is used by cold-water swimmers, its temperature falls to about 5 °C. The water is disinfected with chlorine. When chlorine dissolves in water it reacts to form hypochlorous acid, HOCl, which is the species that actually kills microorganisms.
Cl2(aq) + H2O(l) ⇌ HOCl(aq) + H+(aq) + Cl−(aq)
Polecenie
The pool operators add sodium carbonate to the water to raise its pH. Explain why a larger proportion of the dissolved chlorine reacts with water after the sodium carbonate has been added.

H+ «and/or HOCl» is removed/neutralized by the carbonate «base» AND the position of equilibrium shifts to the right/towards the products ✔
OR
CO32−(aq) + 2 H+(aq) → CO2(g) + H2O(l) «removes a product» AND the equilibrium shifts to the right ✔
Schemat punktowania
Both elements are required for [1]: the removal of H+ (or of HOCl by conversion to OCl−) by the added base and the resulting shift of the equilibrium towards the products. Accept any suitable equation for the reaction of the carbonate with the acid.
