All datasets below are constructed models. Phytoremediation uses plants to remove contaminants or reduce their availability in soil and water. Roots take up water and some dissolved contaminants; transport can carry them to shoots, where some may be released to air. Trees can access deep soil with extensive roots.

Four hybrid aspen clones, a pine and a willow were trialled at a fuel-contaminated site. Separate matched cohorts were evaluated in the two survey years, so percentages are independent survival estimates rather than repeated counts of the same cohort.

Separate cuttings of aspen clone A and willow were placed in equal water volumes with different added fuel volumes. A 0 µL treatment was the control.

Soil-gas measurements followed planting at a contaminated site. Total hydrocarbon mass and a volatile aromatic fraction were measured at the dates shown.

Another experiment tested removal of a water-soluble contaminant Q. Five leafy cuttings had roots immersed in nutrient solution containing Q. One control lacked leaves; the other had no roots or stem in the solution. The apparatus prevented mixing of air between the two compartments.
