Hydrobromic acid, HBr(aq), is a strong acid used in the manufacture of inorganic bromides and as a reagent in organic synthesis.

Polecenie

A small volume of 0.050 mol dm−3 hydrobromic acid is placed in a beaker fitted with a pH probe. Distilled water is then run into the beaker at a constant rate and the pH is logged continuously; the temperature is held at 298 K.

(i) Sketch, on the axes, how the pH changes as the volume of added water increases.

(ii) The hydrobromic acid is then replaced by 0.050 mol dm−3 propanoic acid, the temperature being kept at 298 K. Calculate the pH of the propanoic acid before any water is added.

pKa (propanoic acid) = 4.87

Odpowiedź z klucza

(i) the curve begins at pH 1.3 «−log 0.050» ✔

it rises steeply at first and then flattens «gradient decreasing» ✔

it levels off below pH 7, never crossing it ✔

(ii) Ka=[HX+][CHX3CHX2COOX−][CHX3CHX2COOH]K_\mathrm{a} = \dfrac{[\ce{H+}][\ce{CH3CH2COO-}]}{[\ce{CH3CH2COOH}]}

OR

Ka=[HX+]2[CHX3CHX2COOH]K_\mathrm{a} = \dfrac{[\ce{H+}]^2}{[\ce{CH3CH2COOH}]}

OR

pH = ½(pKa − log c) ✔

«[H+] = √(1.35 × 10−5 × 0.050) = 8.2 × 10−4 mol dm−3» pH = 3.09 ✔

Schemat punktowania

(i) [3]: M1 start at pH 1.3 (accept 1.2–1.4); M2 increasing curve with decreasing gradient; M3 curve remains below pH 7. (ii) [2]: M1 correct Ka expression or the equivalent pH relationship; M2 pH = 3.09 (accept 3.08–3.09). ECF from M1.

Komentarz. Dilution can only bring the pH of an acid closer to 7; a sketch that crosses pH 7 loses M3.
