Wspólne informacje do wiązki zadań
A random quadratic is generated as q(x) = ax2 + bx + c. Choose a and c independently and uniformly from {1,2,3,4}, and choose b independently and uniformly from {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8}. Ordered coefficient choices are distinct and equally likely. Parts (a)–(f) concern this discrete generator; the separate continuous model is specified explicitly in (g) and (h).
Polecenie
For quadratics with two distinct x-intercepts: (i) show that ac=1 gives six possible quadratics; (ii) show that ac=2 gives twelve.

(i) ac=1 forces a=c=1. The condition b²>4 allows b=3,4,5,6,7,8, giving six. (ii) ac=2 has ordered pairs (1,2),(2,1); b²>8 again allows b=3,…,8. Thus there are 2·6=12 quadratics.
Schemat punktowania
(i) A1: one coefficient pair and all six b values establishing six. (ii) A1: six admissible b values. A1: two ordered (a,c) pairs and the resulting product 12. For (ii), referencing the six admissible b values already shown in (i) earns its first A1; repetition is not necessary.
Komentarz. Paper 3: calculator and AA HL formula booklet allowed. Retain exact intermediate expressions; give three significant figures for numerical probabilities.
