Wspólne informacje do wiązki zadań

A symmetric polynomial family is defined by f(x) = x8 + bx4 + d, where b,d are real and d≠0. A double root α satisfies f(α)=0 and f′(α)=0; complex roots are allowed in the algebraic parts. In 1e–1g assume α is a double root. In 1h–1i drop this double-root assumption and take b<0 instead. A root on the imaginary axis is called purely imaginary when its real part is zero.

Polecenie

Take b=2,d=3. (i) Sketch y=f(x), labelling its axis intercepts. (ii) Hence explain why f(x)=0 has no real root.

Odpowiedź z klucza

The polynomial is x⁸+2x⁴+3=(x⁴+1)²+2. It is even, has unique real minimum/y-intercept (0,3), no x-intercepts and rises on both far ends. The entire curve is above the x-axis, so there are no real roots.

Schemat punktowania

(i) A1: symmetric upward profile with minimum on the y-axis. A1: y-intercept (0,3), with no x-intercepts. (ii) A1: valid explanation from the curve being above the x-axis.

Komentarz. Paper 3: calculator and AA HL formula booklet allowed. Supply complete proofs and sufficient reasoning; numerical evidence alone does not establish a general identity.
