A symmetric polynomial family is defined by f(x) = x8 + bx4 + d, where b,d are real and d≠0. A double root α satisfies f(α)=0 and f′(α)=0; complex roots are allowed in the algebraic parts. In 1e–1g assume α is a double root. In 1h–1i drop this double-root assumption and take b<0 instead. A root on the imaginary axis is called purely imaginary when its real part is zero.
Polecenie
Under the double-root assumption, state the b-values for which f(x)=0 has (i) at least one real root; (ii) at least one purely imaginary root.

The roots satisfy x⁴=−b/2 with b≠0. A nonzero real number has positive fourth power, so real roots occur precisely for b<0. A purely imaginary number x=iy with real nonzero y also has x⁴=y⁴>0, so purely imaginary roots occur precisely for b<0 as well. For b<0 the four distinct roots are ±r,±ir with r=(−b/2)^(1/4), each double. For b>0 all roots have nonzero real and imaginary parts.
Schemat punktowania
A1: b<0 for real roots. A1: b<0 for purely imaginary roots.
