Now restrict y2 = (x − 1)3 − 4(x − 1) to its right component x≥3.

(i) Implicit differentiation gives 2yy′=3(x−1)²−4. Divide by 2y and use y=±√[(x−1)³−4(x−1)]. (ii) For x>3, x−1>2 and 3(x−1)²−4>8>0, so neither branch has zero derivative. The upper branch is strictly increasing and the lower strictly decreasing; no local extrema occur on these open branches.
Schemat punktowania
(i) M1:implicit differentiation or chain rule on the explicit branches. A1:2yy′=3(x−1)²−4. A1:substitute the two branches and rearrange. (ii) R1:nonzero derivative of fixed sign on x>3, excluding stationary extrema. Alternatively, for explicit chain-rule differentiation award M1 for the attempt, A1 for the factor ±(1/2)[(x-1)^3-4(x-1)]^(-1/2), and A1 for the factor 3(x-1)^2-4. The implicit equation is not required on this route.
