Two branches are separated by x=−2. The left branch tends to −∞ at −2⁻ and lies below the oblique asymptote y=x/3−4; the right tends to+∞ at −2⁺ and lies above it. Intercepts are (2,0),(8,0),(0,8/3). Extrema are at x=−2±2√10, with values (−14±4√10)/3: a left local maximum and right local minimum. Both far ends approach the oblique line.

A1:both branches with appropriate shape. A1:vertical asymptote and correct one-sided behaviour. A1:oblique asymptote and approach. A1:all axis intercepts in approximately correct positions. Exact labels are not essential when the sketch clearly shows the required features. Follow through the candidate’s earlier asymptotes and intercepts for the corresponding sketch marks when internally consistent; the shape must represent a function. Ignore incorrect written labels when the drawn positions are correct. If only the upper branch is drawn, award at most one of the two asymptote/behaviour marks even if both asymptotes are shown.
