Wspólne informacje do wiązki zadań

A designer fits a trapezoidal opening beneath the elliptical arch x2/16 + y2/4 = 1, y≥0. The lower corners are A=(−4,0) and D=(4,0). The upper corners are B=(−4cos⁡θ,2sin⁡θ)B=(-4\cos\theta,2\sin\theta) and C=(4cos⁡θ,2sin⁡θ)C=(4\cos\theta,2\sin\theta), where 0 < θ < π/2. Coordinates are in metres; θ is the ellipse parameter, not the angle of the radius OC.

Polecenie

As θ approaches π/2, (i) describe the limiting shape; (ii) find the limiting area.

Odpowiedź z klucza

(i) B and C merge at (0,2), leaving a triangle with base AD. (ii) Its area is ½·8·2=8 m², also the limit of A(θ).

Schemat punktowania

A1: describe upper corners merging or the triangular limit, or state that AB (or DC) increases while BC decreases; “area decreases” alone is insufficient. A1: 8 m².

Komentarz. Paper 1: no calculator; AA SL formula booklet allowed. Give exact answers and show algebraic reasoning. Valid equivalent methods earn the corresponding marks unless a specific method is required.
