At k=0, the two solutions are ±a. For 0<√k<2, each side has an inner and outer crossing, giving four solutions. At 2≤√k<4, only the inner pair exists; the asymptote value 2 is never attained on the outer branches. At √k=4 there is one solution, and above 4 none. Thus k=0 or 4≤k<16.
