(i) For x≥0 the graph is y = x − 5 + 11/(x + 2), reflected in the vertical axis for x<0. It is defined for all real x and has no vertical asymptote. Its vertical intercept (0,1/2) is a cusp and local maximum. The two minima are , approximately (±1.32,−0.367). As x→∞ the oblique asymptote is y=x−5; as x→−∞ it is y=−x−5. Both tails approach their lines from above. (ii) For x≥0 the functions agree. For x<0, f(−x) − f(x) = 2x(x2 + 7)/(4 − x2), negative exactly when −2<x<0. The point x=−2 is excluded from f(x), so the answer is (−2, 0).
Schemat punktowania
(i) A1: correct smooth convex right branch with its minimum below the horizontal axis. A1: at least one minimum has correct coordinates. A1: even symmetry with the cusp at (0,1/2). A1: both oblique asymptotes shown with correct equations. A1: correct approach to both asymptotes. (ii) A2: −2<x<0; award A1 for the correct endpoints but incorrect inequality signs.
